Norton Canes Parish Council

New Cemetery Facility

The Parish Council are still taking forward the new cemetery on land adjacent to the churchyard at St.James Church.  This has been a very long process with a number of barriers that we have had to resolve.  Planning permission was granted on the 4th March 2020 and legal proceedings have now been commenced with regard to the access pathway from the church to the new cemetery site.   The Parish Council will become the Burial Authority for the new cemetery and will not be the responsibility of the Church.  The Parish Council already have money in its Reserves to purchase the land and will be looking into financing the project going forward.  There is still a lot of work to do but we are confident that we can take this project forward.  If you have any queries relating to this Project and would like further information please contact the Clerk on 01543 276812 or email

A new planning application for an extension to the cemetery at St.James Church has been submitted to the District Council and it is hoped that a decision will be made in August. The new application includes the access pathway to the new site which is adjacent to the existing churchyard. It also addresses the issue relating to the internal wall between the new and old churchyards. The full application can be viewed at ref number CH/19/235

The Parish Council are continuing to look at a new cemetery site adjacent to the existing Churchyard at St.James Church and working with the Church and the Diocese in looking for a solution to the repair/replacement of the Edwardian Wall which is considered as the best access pathway to the new cemetery. Further updates will be available in future newsletters and on the Parish Council website at

The Parish Council have been working on the new cemetery Project for sometime. The outcome of the Public Consultations was that the residents of Norton Canes wished to have its own cemetery located near to St.James Church.

The testing of the site has now taken place and it has been confirmed that the site can be used for burials. The Parish Council are now looking at the most appropriate pathway for access to the new site.

The proposal for the new pathway will be put before the Parochial Church Council in July 2017 and following the outcome of that meeting the Parish Council will decide the next steps for this Project.

If you have any queries relating to this Project please contact the Parish Clerk on 01543 276812 office hours Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or alternatively email:
